I've found little redeeming in this year's Triple Crown series, so it's been very strange to see casual observers proclaim its greatness. Most of the main contenders pulled out of the Derby with injuries. The race itself was run on a sloppy track which tends to neutralize greatness rather than reveal it. It was won by a gelding, so there's no chance of extending the bloodline. The winning jockey jumped off the winner for a horse that didn't even run in the race.
Borel's ride in the Derby was probably one of the great efforts in recent history, but it has to be tempered by the lack of quality competition and the off track on which it was won. The one saving grace could be if Rachel Alexandra somehow manages to win the Belmont, but that would just raise more questions about the depth of this year's field and what could have been had she been in the Derby.
Meh. Next.
